Staying Well after Depression

Information on Depression

For this treatment trial, we are looking for people who have previously suffered from clinical depression. Read on and answer the questions to find out whether this study would be right for you.

Past Depression

Most of us feel a little depressed from time to time, when we suffer losses or rejections, but clinical depression is worse than this. It involves not only sad mood but also a number of other symptoms. For this study we would like to speak to people who have experienced clinical levels of depression. Although they are not definitive, the questions that follow are a guide to whether or not you may have experienced clinical depression. If you decide you would be interested in taking part in the trial we will ask you more detailed questions to ensure you would be eligible to take part.

When you were feeling depressed:

  1. Was your mood consistently low, MOST OF THE TIME, NEARLY EVERY DAY, for at least 2 weeks?
  2. Were you much less interested in most things, or much less able to enjoy the things you used to enjoy, MOST OF THE TIME, for at least 2 weeks?

If you answered YES to either question 1 or 2, continue with questions 3-9 below.
If you answered NO to both question 1 and 2 (perhaps your low period lasted less than 2 weeks, or did not affect you most of the time), then you probably did not have clinical depression, and therefore this study would not be right for you.

During the 2 week period when you felt depressed and/or uninterested in things:

  1. Was your appetite decreased or increased NEARLY EVERY DAY? OR Did you gain or lose weight without intentionally trying to?
  2. Did you have trouble sleeping NEARLY EVERY NIGHT (difficulty falling asleep, waking up in the night, waking too early in the morning, or sleeping excessively)?
  3. Did you talk or move more slowly than normal, OR were you fidgety, restless or having trouble sitting still, ALMOST EVERY DAY?
  4. Did you feel tired or without energy, ALMOST EVERY DAY?
  5. Did you feel worthless or guilty, ALMOST EVERY DAY?
  6. Did you have difficulty concentrating or making decisions, ALMOST EVERY DAY?
  7. Did you repeatedly consider hurting yourself, feel suicidal, or wish that you were dead?

If you said YES to questions 1 and 2 and YES to 3 or more of questions 3-9, you may have been clinically depressed. Continue with question 10.
If you said YES to only one of questions 1 and 2, but said YES to 4 or more of questions 3-9, you may have been clinically depressed. Continue with question 10.

If you said YES to fewer questions than this, you probably did not have clinical depression, and therefore this study would not be right for you.

If you said YES any of the questions above, and questions 1-9 told you that you may have had clinical depression in the past, you may well be eligible to take part in our trial. We would definitely like to hear from you. Please get in touch with us for further information.
